I tried and tried but it just makes me gag.Recipe search: Is there anything good you can do with ground turkey?
With all of these ingredients and spices, I'd be surprised if you could tell if this was turkey meat or beef. There are several other recipes like it on this site. Perhaps you'll find something you can tolerate. If not, give it up. Go back to beef. If you're trying to save calories and/or fat, there isn't much of a difference between ground turkey and lean ground beef. Don't keep trying to eat something that you really don't care for. If the flavor is the problem you want to use it in heavy flavor dishes to mask that flavor while still getting the great protein.





I use it instead of ground beef in your standard stove top tacos. It is excellent in a slow cooked chili, enchiladas, curries, you can give it a try in marinara for a meaty spaghetti.





Keep in mind, turkey has less fat than beef so it cooks So much faster than ground beef, so part of the problem might be that you're cooking it too long. For the dishes I mentioned you want to break it up before it goes into the pan so it doesn't cook together too fast, it's a little more than half the cook time as a basic lean ground beef.





Just saw the edit, if the smell is the problem cook it in the sauce you're using (in a slow cooker chili for example). There's less chance to overcook it this way too, yay!
I use it for everything I would use ground beef for.





Moroccan Turkey Burgers





1/2 cup sour cream


3 tablespoons chopped fresh mint


3 drops mint extract


2 tablespoons honey


1/8 teaspoon pepper


1/4 cup sour cream


1 egg, beaten


1/2 cup soft bread crumbs


1/4 cup minced onion


1/2 teaspoon salt


1/2 teaspoon cumin


1/2 teaspoon ground ginger


1/8 teaspoon pepper


1-1/4 pounds ground turkey, light and dark meat


2 tablespoons olive oil


4 hamburger buns


3 tablespoons softened butter


lettuce leaves





Prepare and heat grill. Combine 1/2 cup sour cream, mint, mint extract, honey, and dash pepper in small bowl and refrigerate.


In large bowl, combine 1/4 cup sour cream, bread crumbs, egg, onion, salt, cumin, ginger, and 1/8 teaspoon pepper and mix well. Add turkey and mix gently. Form into 4 patties.





Cover and chill patties for 1 hour. Brush patties with olive oil and grill over medium coals for 10-12 minutes, turning once, until thoroughly cooked.





Serve with sour cream mint sauce and lettuce on toasted, buttered hamburger buns. 4 sandwiches
Terrific Turkey Chili --








INGREDIENTS


3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided


1 1/2 pounds ground turkey


1 (1 ounce) package taco seasoning mix


1 teaspoon ground coriander


1 teaspoon dried oregano


1 teaspoon chili pepper flakes


2 tablespoons tomato paste


1 (14.5 ounce) can beef broth


1 (7 ounce) can salsa


1 (14.5 ounce) can crushed tomatoes, or coarsely chopped tomatoes packed in puree


1 (7 ounce) can chopped green chile peppers


1 medium onion, finely chopped


1 green bell pepper, diced


3 medium zucchini, halved lengthwise and sliced


1 bunch green onions, chopped


1 cup sour cream


1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese








DIRECTIONS


Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large stock pot over medium-high heat.





Crumble turkey into the pot, stirring with a wooden spoon to break apart as much as possible. Season with taco seasoning mix, coriander, oregano, chili flakes, and tomato paste, and mix until meat is evenly coated with seasonings. Continue cooking, reducing heat if necessary, until turkey is well browned.





Pour in beef broth, and simmer to reduce liquid slightly, about 5 minutes. Add salsa, tomatoes, and green chilies, and continue cooking at a moderate simmer for ten minutes. Adjust the thickness at any time you feel necessary by adding water.





While chili is still cooking, heat one tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook onion and green bell pepper, stirring occasionally for 5 minutes, or until onion is translucent and bell pepper is lightly browned. Add onion and bell pepper to the chili, and continue cooking at a very low simmer.





In the same skillet, heat the remaining tablespoon of oil over medium-high heat. Add the zucchini, and cook stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes, or until lightly browned. Add the zucchini to the chili, reduce heat, and continue cooking 15 minutes more. Again, adjust the consistency with water as needed.





Ladle chili into serving bowls. Top with sour cream, green onion, and cheddar cheese, and serve.

Fast and Friendly Meatballs --








INGREDIENTS


2 tablespoons olive oil


1 (20 ounce) package ground turkey


1 egg, beaten


1/3 cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs








DIRECTIONS


Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with the olive oil, and place it in the oven while preheating.





In a medium bowl, mix together the ground turkey, egg, and bread crumbs using your hands. Using an ice cream scoop if possible, form the meat into golf ball sized meatballs. Place about 1 inch apart in the hot baking dish. Press down to flatten the bottom just slightly.





Bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven, then turn them over, and continue baking for about 5 more minutes, or until somewhat crispy on the outside. Serve with pasta and sauce or however you'd like.
Untidy Samuels





Probably more widely known as Sloppy Joes, these can be made with ground beef or ground turkey. This homemade version is light years ahead of anything you can buy in an envelope or can, and really just as easy. I like to serve these with paper-thin slices of red onion.





Ingredients


1 teaspoon vegetable oil


1 lb. ground beef or ground turkey


1 medium yellow onion, peeled and chopped fine


1/2 cup best-quality ketchup


1/2 cup best-quality chili sauce


2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce


1 teaspoon coarse salt


freshly cracked black pepper


1/3 cup water


6 sesame seed topped hamburger buns, warmed





Method


Brush a skillet with oil and warm over moderate heat, 30 seconds. Add beef [or turkey] and onion and saut茅 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Add all remaining ingredients [except buns] and simmer, uncovered, 10 minutes. Spoon mixture between split buns and serve immediately.

Simple Turkey Chili


1 1/2 teaspoons olive oil


1 pound ground turkey


1 onion, chopped


2 cups water


1 (28 ounce) can canned crushed tomatoes


1 (16 ounce) can canned kidney beans - drained, rinsed, and mashed


1 tablespoon garlic, minced


2 tablespoons chili powder


1/2 teaspoon paprika


1/2 teaspoon dried oregano


1/2 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper


1/2 teaspoon ground cumin


1/2 teaspoon salt


1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper





DIRECTIONS


Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Place turkey in the pot, and cook until evenly brown. Stir in onion, and cook until tender.


Pour water into the pot. Mix in tomatoes, kidney beans, and garlic. Season chili powder, paprika, oregano, cayenne pepper, cumin, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 30 minutes.





GROUND TURKEY ENCHILADAS





1 1/2 lbs ground turkey


1 pkg frozen spinach - thawed and drained


2 cups salsa


1 can diced tomatoes


1 pkg flour tortillas


2 cups Mexican blend cheese


1 8 oz. block cream cheese


ground cumin to taste





Cook ground turkey in skillet until no longer pink over medium heat. Add drained spinach and 1 cup of salsa to turkey and cumin to taste (about 1 tsp). Cook about 5 minutes until all liquid is absorbed. Remove from heat and add cream cheese. Mix until melted.


Lay flour tortilla flat and place 1/3 cup mix, roll and place in greased 13x9 inch pan with flat side up. Bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees.





Remove from oven and top with 1 cup salsa mixed with can of diced tomatoes and additional cumin to taste. Top with cheese. Return to oven for 5 minutes until cheese is melted.





Serve with refried beans and Mexican rice. Sour cream and guacamole are also great additions.
Turkey is one bland, tasteless meat which, unfortunately is healthier than red meat and we should encourage it in our diet.





I had the same problem and now I am able to eat it and enjoy it. What I do is season the ground turkey with mashed garlic gloves, chopped onions, chopped green peppers, chopped olives, salt to taste, black pepper to taste, add dry raisins to taste and the most important ingredient is pouring half fresh sour orange juice. Blend well and leave it for at least 1 hour in the fridge. Then cook slow in about 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and cover till done. Serve with white rice.





I also use this as turkey burgers and my kids love it (I just take the green peppers out, since they do not like it with green peppers
Turkey Nacho Bake


INGREDIENTS


1 pound ground turkey


2 cloves garlic, chopped


freshly ground black pepper to taste


2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes


2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives


2 tablespoons hot sauce (optional)


1 (1 ounce) package dry taco seasoning mix


1 (14 ounce) can refried beans


1 (14.5 ounce) package tortilla chips


2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese


1 (4 ounce) can sliced black olives


1 ripe tomato, diced


1 bunch green onions, sliced





DIRECTIONS


Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).


In a large skillet over medium heat, begin to brown the ground turkey. Stir in garlic, pepper, 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes, and 1 tablespoon chives. Stir in 1 tablespoon hot sauce. When the turkey is browned, stir in taco seasoning mix according to package instructions.


Pour the beans into a microwave safe bowl, and heat in the microwave until softened. Stir in 1 tablespoon chives and 1 tablespoon hot sauce.


Spread the tortilla chips across the bottom of a baking sheet. Spoon the beans mixture over the chips. Then spread the turkey mixture across the top. Sprinkle cheese, then olives, tomatoes, green onions, and remaining 1 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes over the top.


Bake in preheated oven until cheese is melted, about 15 minutes.

Here is a link to a video on how to make homemade burgers. It's a quick, easy recipe and the burgers turn out delicious. Best of all, you can use ground turkey instead of ground beef.

What I do it brown two packages of the turkey in the bottom of a large pot. Once that's done, I drain the grease then add 4 large sliced carrots, 2 cups of rice-brown or white- and add garlic powder. Then I fill the pot with just enough water to cover the whole thing and cook over med heat for about 2 hours-stirring every now and then so it doesn't stick to the bottom of the pot
Maybe its just a mind thing, but how have you tried it? It makes good chili and turkey burgers, you can really add anything to it. Paula Deen has a good recipe for goulash using a combo of ground beef and turkey. If you like I can supply that recipe for you, let me know
